First UK import of rare Indonesian shrimp
16-06-2008
These beautiful shrimps are endemic to lakes in Sulawesi, Indonesia, yet to be described, the ‘Cardinal’ shrimp is of the Cardinia species, closely related to C. Spinata. Aquajardin Southampton is believed to be the first to have imported this rare shrimp into the UK. With very limited stocks, and such a small natural distribution, just a few lakes in the hills of former Celebes, the staff at the store have decided to try and breed the colony in dedicated nano planted aquariums. Emma Bright, manager of Aquajardin Southampton said " As little is known about this species, we feel it is important to care for the limited supply to the best of our understanding, our experienced staff have taken care to create as natural as possible environments for these, with hopes to breed" She added, " If we are lucky enough to breed these not only will it be a first in UK aquaria but also will give us, (Aquajardin) a decent stock so that we can offer tank bred specimens to our customers with limited environmental impact". The staff have displayed their rare finds in glass display cabinets at the Southampton store for visitors to see. There are a limited supply available for sale priced at £19.99 each. As these are so special and rare, staff want to ensure that these shrimp are only sold to those who can offer the best care. There are plans to move a small quantity to the Gloucester store so that customers there can have the opportunity to purchase this wonderful species.
